Earnings fell to $200 million from $780 million in the year-earlier period. Sales totaled $5.8 billion. Earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization fell 4% to $1.3 billion as Cemex began excluding its Venezuelan operations as of Aug. 1, 2008. Bbitda rose 21% in Mexico. It fell 58% in the U.S., 19% in Spain and 48% in the U.K., Cemex reported. Venezuela seized the company's operations there in mid-August as the country determined to nationalize the cement industry.
